Do you Recognize Voices By Phone?

I remember that time when I was calling to my brother’s home phone, and my niece answered my call, she still a little girl, I said Hello! and she really surprised me when she said: Hello uncle Hesham! She recognized my voice from the first second!

Like if she knows who is calling, she didn’t take time at all, I am amazed! I just want to tell you she was almost two years that time, and I rarely call to home phone, I believe she didn’t hear my voice for more than tow month or so.

I become carouse and asked her father about her, I told him the story and asked him who else she can recognize his voice if she is answering a phone call? He simply told that she can recognize everybody’s voice, even if she never talked to them by phone before. Wow! This is so smart, just imagine two years old kid can recognize voices when talking by phone, me myself I have hard time to remember the voice of the caller if my caller id is not working for some reason, and I can not see the number of the caller!

So, that was about me, but what about you?! How things are going with you when you answer a phone call? Do you find it easy all the time to recognize the person who is calling you? Or you are sometimes lost like me?!

Do you think your mode can effect your concentration and make it hard for you to remember voices?

  1. I think it all depends on the type of voice. I can usually identify a male voice, but sometimes have trouble discerning the higher-pitched female voices. I don’t know that concentration has as much to do with it as simply one’s ability to hear well.

  2. I certainly cannot recognize the not too familiar or frequent voices. But frequent voices, I do. But the ability of this two-year-old kid to recognize the voice is really amazing. I try to play with my 8-year-old granddaughter by changing my tone, but she finds me out immdly.

@Stacy Alexander, well.. yeah, is depends on the type of voice, but also on your memory and how you can remember the person’s voice fast. Thanks for your visit and comment.

Funny… It’s strange how some voices stick and how others don’t. I once got several minutes into a conversation thinking it was ‘friend A’ when it turned out to be ‘friend b’..!!

I am able to recognised almost 95% of my acquaintances or kins. For non-acquaintances, I will be able to recognise their voices after the initial call to a 85% accuracy.

    Can’t beat a two-year-old :)

Great post, I have three boys (3/2/2) it always amazes me when they can tell who they are speaking with on the phone, because our family is so far away they do not get to see them often.

  10. Jeanine says:

I can tell if it is someone that I talk to regularly, but if it is someone I don’t talk to as often I might not know. Sometimes people call at work and they act like I know who it is. I hate to say, “Who is this?”…lol

I can’t recognize voices by phone at all. If I don’t see the caller ID, I’ve got about a one in ten shot of guessing who it is, otherwise.

I usually have that talent, till now..
All the time, i was amazed that not a single voice I can not recognize.
I can know you by your voice, without even knowing your name or face..

For 24 years of my life, I thought I am alone with this talent, till I passed by your post.

PS: in a new research I read, they said that women can recognize voices better than men.

  29. Hisham says:

@Lasto adri, well, I can say that women is more sensitive!

I don’t have any trouble… except on an occasion when a sister calls and the way something is said (the expression in the words) will throw me off because it’s so much like another sister.

  31. Neesh says:

That’s cute. My dad and his brother have twin voices which is really bizarre, but I remember even when I was little, I would pick up the phone and talk to my uncle thinking he was my dad! Needless to say, I was pranked a LOT by those 2!

    One other thought…
I also waited for hours one day for my dad to pick me up after calling him to do so… turned out he went and picked up my sister from where she was!! She’s my twin and we sound very alike ;)

I have an odd ability to recognize voices. I have trouble remembering faces but a voice I can pick out in a crowd. I have watched NASCAR for the last ten years and can pick out which driver is talking even on the radio. It is kind of spooky actually.

  46. OddTalent says:

    @Steve,

I have the odd talent of recognizing not only the voices of people that I have personally interacted with, but I can also recognize the voices of movie actors and actresses. When we are watching an animated movie, lets say, or someone is watching a movie in an adjacent movie, I can tell the names of the actors and actresses from the voice. Does any one know what this ability is called? I was researching this subject recently, the only thing i could find is ‘Speaker Recognition’.
