Mikkel Lucas
Mikkel Lucas, is a Danish commercial director at Serious Games Interactive company, who was our session instructor at crossing borders, he presented to the course group the “Global Conflicts Palestine” game.
.
“Global Conflicts Palestine” is absolutely not a shooting game, so.. you are going to TALK -interact with other characters in the game- instead of shooting, it’s a strategy game that helps you to write an article about the situation in Occupied Palestine depending on what mission of the available five missions you are playing, assuming you are a freelancer journalist and you have just arrived in Jerusalem trying to meet some people and build trust by understanding and explaining different perspectives to interview them depending on choosing the right answer from two questions, if you seceded to gain people’s personal story then you will be able to quote from it, by quoting from the story you will be able to complete your ‘good’ article and finish the mission. So.. The idea of the game depends on your choice, and the goal is writing a good article.
It says on the company website “Global Conflicts: Palestine targets critical and reflective people who are looking for a (game) experience that challenges their outlook on the world”.
After plying three missions of the game, the group feed backs was against the game, and we started to think what kind of resources they used to build it!
So.. By asking Mikkel about what kind of researches they made to make the build of the game, he told us that the game is fully build depending on media. Of course no body from the group liked to hear that, because this reflected bad on the game and made the game very far a way from reality! As they didn’t interview anyone from Jerusalem and they never been their, even graphics are not seem to be real.

Snap from game brochure
Mike says that by the looking to the name of the game you will simply understand witch side the game supports. But if you read the small brochure that comes with the game and read carefully you will discover something else. Here is shoot from the book where it says “since late 2000 more than a 1.000 Israelis have been killed in terror attacks, by Palestinians. Israelis have killed over 3.500 Palestinians in security or reprisal operations”. This leads to the opposite of what Mikkel meant, and of course the brochure has lots of other historical mistakes, and bad media terms that Insults the Palestinians even if it’s only an 11 pages brochure which makes you think that the name has been chosen for marketing purposes only and not reflecting the real side of Affiliation.
We wanted to know also who is the targeting audience for the game, Mikkel says it’s targeting people over 18, and it’s not for those who want to learn about the situation in Jerusalem, but the is focusing on those who are living inside the conflict to give them education, experience and information about how to deal with the conflict. All the group was against that also, because how come you will teach someone to deal with a conflict that you don’t know anything true about it, and you didn’t even made any researches on the conflict to better understand the situation in further to build a qualified educational game, the game’s options are so limited.
Regarding to my interest on the media I have asked Mikkel only one question that came into my mind, my question was “What is the feature of the game?”, and after hearing Mikkel’s answering that, I have to say that I am really sorry, but I am so disappointed because of the game, because there will not be an updates or any new versions of the game in feature. The game will not follow up the present events, so it’s really enough to play it twice and then forget about it, it will not be interesting game anymore, which means this game is dead already.
Here is a short list of feed backs that I have collect them during the discussions on the game:
-Idea of the game is not unique.
-learning skills are so limited.
-Quotes are week.
-Not reality.
-Characters of the game is not real
-Stories are week.
-Graphics are not reflecting the real place.
-No feature, no updates.
-It’s not fun at all.
-Made only for making profits and marketing.
I think the really interesting thing about “Global Conflicts Palestine” game is that each small detail in the game could easily get a bad feedback!
note: this information was collected biased on Arab perspective , if there is any other opinion against it plz don’t hesitate to comment.
