Life.. A choice you can live with

I have heard today about magicJacks, they say it’s a new USB connector to make free phone calls, you can make free phone calls to any cell phone or a land phone in America, so anyways I got the idea of sending one of these magicJacks to my family out of America so they can call to my cell phone at any time they want!
I got this quite from magicJacks website as they have a free trial offer:
“Use our Phone Service free for 30 days, make all the free calls you please. 100% Risk FREE – you pay nothing. (Hurry, less than 10,000 magicJacks are eligible to be shipped for the Free Trial Offer Today, Sunday, October 18, 2009. This offer is not available in stores and will expire.)”!
Anyways I don’t think it’s the right time for me to get this free offer right now as I have tons of stuff to pay for already! And here is the link of their website if you want to give a try: magicJacks
So.. It’s using Internet-based telephone service (VoIP) technology! But the question that remains is it going to work if someone uses it to make calls to the States from outside the country?! If you had the chance to try it then give me a feedback!
Not sure if this will work outside yhe us but this is great for the residence of the us thanks for sharing

Actually we are using MagicJack as of this weekend. I think though, that a high speed internet connection is required on the computer you plug the MJ into…you could try with a land line dial up connection and gauge the call quality. I bought the MJ at Best Buy in the US $39.99. That includes the first year of MJ service. I then set it up here…plug phone land line and phone into it it and then plug into USB port on computer. The software will install automatically. When you set it up you will select the area code in which you live and the MJ will obtain a “local” phone number. It’s that easy. I tested it a few times making calls to my mobile phone (Verizon) and land line (AT&T) and vice versa…all successfully. Then my parents carried it to Jordan with them on the plane. I am not sure about mailing, if Mr. Postal Employee / Customs Official would “allow” it through or take it outright. Once in JOrdan and after plugging a land line into one side of the MJ and then the other into the USB port on a computer in Jordan, it downloaded the application and was ready to receive calls. You can then call the phone number and it will ring the phone connected to it (use your Jordan mobile to call the number and see if it rings). I called my cousin on his mobile and then used another phone to call the MJ and I heard it ringing in the background. Word of caution, if you call from/to your mobile you will incur charges against your account; allocated monthly minutes those will be deducted….it would be treated like a call to your cell phone from within the US. If you have unlimited night and weekends, then the call is of course free since you dial a US based phone number. When the phone connected to the MJ initiates a call, they just dial the areacode and phone number, YES even US cell phone numbers. They would use the phone as if it were a US land line. For example they dial 212-555-1212 and your cell phone would ring, the call ID will show the MJ number that was assigned. Note, that the prefix “1″ is not required. If you have questions, post comments and I will try to remember to come back to you blog, otherwise make a new post and I will see it through qwaider.com. :-)

I use MagicJack regularly between here and my parents’ country. It sure needs a PC and a fast speed connection. It gives you a phone number in the United States.
I gave it to my parents who have a 256k DSL connection to the Internet. They hocked it into the home PC, connected a regular cheap phone set into it, and viola, works like a charm, I can call them from the States 100% free and they can do the same thing. Voice quality is most of the time excellent. Sometimes however; when they are downloading large file, we experience some break-offs in the line.. Nevertheless, generally speaking worth every dime I paid. It costs $39.95 and works for 1-year, after which you will need to pay $19.95/year for renewal.
