Life.. A choice you can live with

What you are going to do in the Dark for one Earth Hour?

While I was driving back  home from a meeting today, I heard this on FM Radio in Cairo – Egypt, they are calling all Egyptians for supporting Earth Hour for the first time, I didn’t know about this before, I have no idea how this happen, but I juts didn’t know about it. Anyways.. now I knew why thy announce it on Radio, it’s probably because Egypt’s First Lady, Her Excellency Madame Suzanne Mubarak, supports Earth Hour’s global call for action on climate change.

What is Earth Hour?

For those who don’t know about Earth Hour, it’s an annual international event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

When is the next Earth Hour?

Earth Hour will next take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm, local time.
millions of people are joining together, and turning off their lights to help make a difference and raise awareness about the issue of global warming.

What I know that in Egypt there is lots of Earth Hours, almost every week there is a complete shutdown the Electricity Power city by city, this is a plan to save electricity. This gets worse in the summer time, because in some country side places the electricity company cut the power in certain hours almost everyday.

What’s is the Big Deal in Egypt?

I am not sure why we should participate on something is not new for us, the difference between the usual power shutdown in Egypt and the Earth Hour is you are not forced to it, you have the complete choice to turn off lights on that night on time, and participating with out been forced by government orders or electricity company. So.. That’s it!!

Just want you to know that I am not against the idea itself, I only think it doesn’t make any difference for Egyptians, only saving some Electricity, which is happening everyday by default,  but is it really worth participate?

Have you participated on Earth Hour last year 2008?
And what you are going to do in the dark for one hour?

I have mixed feelings about the whole Earth Hour thing. But another thing – I think Global Pollution is really the thing to address, not just Global Warming. The real problem is toxins and pollutants. Maybe those create a lack of balance amongst the elements and within the atmosphere. But CO2 is not in itself a bad thing. Plants need it to survive. Its pollution that is the problem.
